Politician

It's been a long presidential campaign season. I'm looking forward to it being over.

No matter who wins, it's going to be a deeply divided country.

From Cream's Farewell Concert

Hey now baby, get into my big black car.
Hey now baby, get into my big black car.
I want to just show you what my politics are.

Im a political man, and I practice what I preach.
Im a political man, and I practice what I preach.
So don’t deny me baby, not while you’re in my reach.

I support the left, though I’m leaning, leaning to the right.
I support the left, though I’m leaning to the right.
But I’m just not there when it’s coming to a fight.

Hey now baby, get into my big black car.
Hey now baby, get into my big black car.
I want to just show you what my politics are.

Cool. I wasn't really familiar with that tune. But your lyrics are a bit off - the 2nd and 3rd verses are reversed.

I'd be curious to see more of that show. Will have to look on YouTube. Odd camera work, though. Couldn't figure out why the camera remained focused on Jack Bruce throughout most of Clapton's solo.

The country is always divided. For some reason, though, I do feel like Obama would do a better job of healing some of the wounds that have opened up over the last few decades. No proof to support that, but I do think he's concerned about the country in a way that McCain is not.

Yes, Jack Bruce reversed the verses in that live perfomance. In the studio version, the lyrics match that text.

I'd like to see more of that show too. What was driving me crazy in that video was the slight lag with the audio. I agree, not enough Clapton fretwork.

I agree that Obama is a better uniter and healer, but I'm afraid the way these campaigns have been run against him (both in the primaries and now), the well has really been poisoned. If he wins, the drumbeat of the constant attack machine will make the ones that were run against Carter and Clinton seem weak by comparison.

Except that Obama's not Carter or Clinton. He's politically smarter than Carter and has much more integrity than Clinton. And it can make a difference. If Clinton hadn't been such a scumbag, for example, the Republican attacks wouldn't have gained so much traction. Also, Clinton set himself up badly with the media from the beginning, since they had the audacity to question his lies about sleeping around. He even ran ads against them during the general election. So, I think they took particular delight in exposing his infidelities.

And how much traction would Reagan have had against Carter if Jimmy hadn't botched the Iran hostage situation?

The extremists will attack, as they're already doing, but I'm not sure the attacks will be as effective. For one thing, I think a lot of people are sick of this kind of stuff. Secondly, I think the media would be more on Obama's side. Thirdly, the GOP is about to implode, and the extremists are going to have their hands full fighting against the moderates in their own party. Look what's happening right now, how many moderate conservatives are abandoning McCain. Joe six-pack and the Georgetown cocktail party set are going to spend at least a year blaming each other for what has happened. And I think it could go on even longer. Even affecting the 2012 race.

Well, I hope you're right. Of course, he has to get there first. Are you ready to put this thing in the win column already?

I'd say that he's leading the game at the two-minute warning. But you and I both know that crazy things can happen in the last 2 minutes of a game.

I'm a Jets fan, Jeff. I have about the same faith in the Democrats not screwing up as I do in the Jets. (Though Obama does exude a certain Tom Brady-like calm.) But I won't believe it until I see that big F on the final score.

270 electoral votes. Hell, even that won't satisfy me. If he gets over 300 the night of Nov 4, and we're not having to recount Ohio and/or Florida, maybe I'll believe it.
