I Could Have Been a Contender
Image and following quote are basically lifted from an old post of mine titled “An Instinct to See Life In a Comic Light”, which unfortunately is more than six words.
Noonday Rest, by Jean François Millet (1866)
”Supreme egotism and utter seriousness are necessary for the greatest accomplishment, and these the Irish find hard to sustain; at some point, the instinct to see life in a comic light becomes irresistible, and ambition falls before it.”

You're definitely someone to contend with :)
I suppose I can still be contentious...
Really, that's only 4 or 5 words, Jeff: "I coulda been-a contenda!" You're not writing it with the correct Brando-Brooklyn pronunciation. :-)
Interesting, all 3 of yours seem to imply struggle with self and/or the world. Very masculine and existential. And it's not even Draft day yet.
(I looked at 3 web sites just now, trying to figure WHEN draft day was - I saw more stories on the draft than any sane person could possibly want, and NONE of the sites bother to post the dates of the damn thing.)
William,
Yeah, I suppose, but the Rod Steiger/Marlon Brando thing is a technicality. In fact, I think that's a highly overrated scene in a suberb film full of much better scenes. I don't know why they singled that one out. I don't consider myself a bum either, but the existential struggle is probably very much on the money. That's an astute observation.
Draft Day! I think I'm still recovering from PTSD. I can't watch football news yet... And that's pretty bad.
