My Linebacker

He’s not big, but he’s tough as nails…

It ain’t the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog… and if you don’t want to run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.

Speaking of linebackers, that reminds me of one of my favorite Super Bowl commercials – the one where “office linebacker Terry Tate” brought a little bit of discipline to the workplace. “Hey Janice!”

Terry Tate reminds me of my Novice Master!

Hi Drew,

I was a little bit like that with fraternity pledges...

What order are you in, the Knights Hospitaller? :-)

I hope your linebacker doesn't act at home like Terry Tate does at the office.

That commercial is hilarious.

It went over my head too, but Wikipedia told me. I guess it really is the source of all popular culture knowledge :-)

Ha! Excellent question. He's 45 because he started the year at cornerback. They moved him to inside linebacker in the second half of the season. He's into defense... Likes tackling. He likes Teddy Bruschi, but his favorite players are Richard Seymour (93) and Rodney Harrison (37).

Speaking of the Patriots, the Pats and the Jets both stunk it up last week didn't they? I'm starting to doubt that the Patriots will make it past the first round of the playoffs.

You have a picure of yourself in the uniform of "America's Team"? Leroy Jordan was great. What number was Hollywood Henderson? 56?

My employer would love to have a Terry Tate around if they could get away with it.

Harrison is definitely a junkyard dog. What a hitter.

To be honest, I had a feeling the Jets might lose that game. Everything was just going too well for them. At the beginning of the season, I thought I'd be very pleased if they could go 8-8. I still think they can do that. And they've been a better team than I expected. I like their prospects next year, especially if we get a real RB, and - I hate to say it, because I like Pennington - a better QB.

I didn't expect the Pats to go down to Miami 21-0, though. What in the world's going on? They're certainly not going to go far if they keep doing that. On the other hand, I have a feeling they'll do better when they get to the playoffs. As long as the Colts go down, I'll be happy.

San Diego sure looks good, but we are talking about Marty S and his history in big games. Baltimore also looks pretty fearsome. On the other hand, my 2nd favorite team, the Broncos, are going in the wrong direction fast.

San Diego-Dallas? Can Romo play at a high enough level? Would love to see New Orleans finally make it to the Big Show, but I don't know if they're that good yet. The playoffs should be interesting.

Oh, yes, Hollywood was #56. The great Randy White was #54. Bob Lilly #74. Too Tall Jones #72. Harvey Martin #79.

How frightening that I can still remember all of that. I've forgotten a lot of wonderful people and events in my life, but I know uniform numbers. Even scarier, I can still remember the 3rd-string QB - Clint Longley!

William,

Forgot to mention, the young kids consider the look with the short socks and the exposed calves to be very cool...

The Jets had a lot riding on that game, and they already knew that the Patriots had lost that day... Hard to figure. I've never been much of a believer on Pennington's heart. I miss seeing Curtis Martin, too. Sounds like he's all done, huh?

Rodney Harrison seems to be the irreplaceable guy back there for the Patriots. He's the heart and soul of the defense... They almost lost the Super Bowl to Carolina a few years back, just due to the fact that Harrison had broken his arm in the 4th quarter. As for the offense, they have no wide-outs, period. Corey Dillon is slowing down, and now Maroney is hurt. Watson had been exposed as a fumbler if you hit him on the arms... And Brady? Quite frankly, he hasn't been playing well, good receivers, or no good receivers. I heard he just broke up with his girlfriend. Maybe he was feeling distracted, my co-workers suggest.

The Colts are frauds. Mark my words, Manning will never win a Super Bowl there. I'm a little tird of all the Peyton-adulation anyway. What has he ever won?

Marty Schottenheimer will mess up in San Diego eventually. :-)

New Orleans and Dallas are pretty exciting, but I still think the real iron is in the AFC. Baltimore is looking pretty good with a rejuvanated Ray Lewis. My son and I are huge Steve McNair admirers.

Clint Longley! I still remember that Thanksgiving Day game when he came in against Washington. What happened to him? Was he run out of town for taking a swing at Staubach in the locker room, or something like that?

Randy White, the "Manster". :-) Tool Tall was great too, but it was really funny when he switched to boxing and the little Mexican guy was knocking him all over the ring. What was his name? Yaqui something...

You know, I was wondering how long it would be before all those TV commercials, endorsements, and People Maghazine stories got to you guys. I don't remember seeing any of that after the first 2 Super Bowls. :-) Breaing up with his girlfriend! That explains it!

Nothing. Zero. Zilch. I've been sick of Poster Boy for a while now. Glad to know I'm not the only one who doesn't believe he's the Greatest Quarterback in the History of the World.

I like McNair. I'm glad to see him get another chance with the Ravens. (Though, being a big Vince Young fan, I'm also glad McNair's no longer on the Titans.) Why do you guys like him, though? I hate Ray Lewis, though. Of course, I wouldn't say that to his face. "Hi, Mr. Lewis. You're an excellent linebacker. Really!"

I don't know - I'm wondering what's stronger - Schottenheimer's bad playoff coaching or LT's amazing ability. Marty never had quite this much on any of his previous playoff teams. A great offense and a great defense. I think a SD-Baltimore conference championship would be something else.

Yeah, Clint got into a scuffle with Roger and wound up leaving. Big mistake. Roger was THE MAN. When he retired from the Cowboys, a lot of people seriously wnated him to run for governor of Texas. You did not take swings at Roger Staubach. I just looked up Longley's stats. 1974 and 1975 in Dallas. 1976 with San Diego, 3 games. Then he was done. But he was great in that one game, which is why I guess we still remember the 3rd string QB for the 1974 Dallas Cowboys. Or maybe he was 2nd string, before Danny White got there.

You remember more about Too Tall's boxing career than I do. I didn't follow it much for some reason.

Well, I guess we went and jinxed Steve McNair. He got injured yesterday. We like him because we figure him for one of the most underrated players in the NFL. He's tough, he's smart, he's good, and he's got great leadership qualities.

Ray Lewis is scary. Do you think he's guilty of the crime? My son doesn't like him, but he likes Ed Reed.

Yep, Too Tall won a 6-round decision over Jesus "Yaqui" Meneses in 1979, but he got knocked down once or twice.
