Brother Cesare Bonizzi, OFM Cap. The Heavy Metal Friar
The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, founded by former Capuchins, have hip-hop artist Stan Fortuna as their troubador. The Caps have responded with 62-year-old Brother Cesare Bonizzi (click on image).
Take that Stan!
The CFR have nothing on the Caps...
Rammstein's Oliver Riedel says, "German language suits heavy metal music. French might be the language of love, but German is the language of anger".
Hmmm. What is Italian to heavy metal? The language of faith?
Perhaps Cristina can translate Brother Cesare for us. That is, if his ... music... um... well... if it can be translated. :-D

Stupid BBC doesn't give the name of the band! How can I order their 2nd album?
Maybe they could open for Zeppelin and he could recapture Jimmy Page's soul from the Devil. On video preferably.
I read that as "hat trick" to... Hockey on the brain, and it's only July. I'm not a metal fan, but I'd check the guy out.
For William: Stuff about their band. Knew my grad student skills would come in handy some day.
...well... I don't understand anything!
Was his band invited to World youth Days?
Cristina
Ah, one more reason to be proud of the Capuchin reform! Looks like my spiritual director is going to be fired and replaced with this brother.
Uh Oh - I think The St. Louis Jesuits are going to be left in the dust :)
I'm afraid the only bit I could make out of the lyrics wasn't terribly enlightening:
"Che cosa volete?"
"METALLO!"
"Suonare?"
"METALLO!"
"Cantare?"
"What do you want?"
"METAL!"
"To play?"
"METAL!"
"To sing?"
I'm not quite sure how it fits into Franciscan spirituality, but I guess some way...
My Jesuit friend suggests he may be possessed.
Vow of poverty, eh? What I want to know is how the good brother managed to score Metallica tix 15 years ago...
He's screaming and growling in Italian. Is it "valid" heavy-metal if it's not in Latin? Or German? Or some variant on Anglo-Saxon?
I don't know if they were at Youth Day in Sydney or not, but they were at Gods of Metal 2008
Between Brother Cesare and St. Benedict's Beer Blessing, we could have quite a party this Summer. The heck with those stick-in-the-mud, killjoy Jesuits.
Brother Charles, you really must re-post St Thomas Aquinas on "Whether it is fitting to drink beer?"
Jeff --
After a night out in NYC with my Jesuit friends, you'll never describe them that way again.
Another Italian cappuccino, Padre Fedele, last year was charged with raping a nun and was expelled from the order. It was a great scandal.
Br Bonizzi, despite his lyrics, helps to look favourably the cappuccino order again.
Liam,
I haven't been down to the apple in a couple of years. I await the invitation!
I believe you. It may not be what you have in mind by any means, but my Jesuit brother-in-law's idea of "roughing it" is foie gras and sauterne at The Chanticleer on Nantucket. In any case, Steve says they're fun.
Cristina,
Sorry to hear that story. Our Cardinal Sean O'Malley is a Capuchin, and we're very fond of him.
