Taking a Brief Hiatus From Nonviolence

The Greatest 3-Round Fight in Professional Boxing History.
Tommy "Hit Man" Hearns challenges "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler for the Middleweight Title - April 15, 1985

I guess this one is for the guys only. If any of the ladies (or anyone else) wants to take me to task for giving "sport" status to an activity that has the goal of separating another man from his senses, I suppose that's fair.

Well, cut me a little slack for this... I was a wrestler in High School, after all... I do still have a bit of a martial spirit. This post is dedicated to John Haynes, who's a boxing fan.

I was in Lisbon when this fight took place, and I was stunned when I saw the result in the papers the next morning. I was a big fan of Marvin's but I wasn't sure he he was going to be able to stand up to Hearns.

Poor Tommy. He had sort of a glass jaw (as we found out in Round 3). If he had any kind of chin at all, he might have gone down as the best pound-for-pound fighter of all time. As for Marvin, this fight took a lot out of him too. This warrior was never quite the same afterwards.

I don't see the appeal of boxing, but I used to like watching martial arts movies ... maybe not so different.

Bruce Lee? :-) Didn't you actually belong to a Dojo?

I suppose it's not that much different. Boxing is sort of dying off now, but the best of these guys once had a craft and some technique (the "sweet science"), and at least the Marquess of Queensberry tried to put some rules around this kind of thing. Now, the "Ultimate Fighting Championship" is all the rage, which looks like a bunch of drunken thugs in a barroom brawl trying to maul each other. I don't think one of these guys could last 2 minutes with a half-decent club-boxer.

I did belong to a dojo. That's where I met my ex, who was really good at martial arts. We spent much time at the Vietnamese movie theater downtown watching Chinese kung fu movies.

But my hero was Chuck Norris. I know he has a kitschy reputation now, but back in the day, he was very good at tournament karate ... In 1969, he won Karate's triple crown for the most tournament wins of the year, and the fighter of the year award by Black Belt Magazine. - wiki

Crystal, did you know that outer space exists because it's afraid to be on the same planet as Chuck Norris?

I've never really known a lot about boxing, but there's something about it that I like. I love Mohammed Ali. The "Ultimate Fighting" thing is depressing.

Ha :-)

Sadly, he seems to have changed, not for the better, since I last paid attention to him. I can remember, though, that I had an old book by him on how to use guided imagery to help with exercise and karate - it was pretty good.

Ah, the Chuck Norris facts... Here are the Top 100, such as...

Chuck Norris sold his soul to the devil for his rugged good looks and unparalleled martial arts ability. Shortly after the transaction was finalized, Chuck roundhouse kicked the devil in the face and took his soul back. The devil, who appreciates irony, couldn't stay mad and admitted he should have seen it coming. They now play poker every second Wednesday of the month.

Chuck Norris... Meh. I still like Bruce. Here he is whupping up on hairy Chuck.

Jackie Chan is a hoot.

I do like Bruce Lee too. Part of what attracted me to the ex was that he was Asian :-)

Crystal,

Bruce Lee. :-) "Be the Water..."

Jack,

Absolutely! Jersey Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles. Great heavyweights, but a bit long in the tooth when they fought Marciano.

Tony Janiro, Archie Moore (George Plympton fought him and lived to write about it). Davey, I don't know... Tony Zale - tough Polish middleweight.

The films I'd like to see would have been those epic wars between Sandy Saddler and Willie Pep. They say they were both incredible boxers.

Jeff, Chuck Davey was a welterweight in the 50' who was first fighter made for TV. Had masters degree from Michigan State, clean cut etc. Wednesday night fights promoted him as new era in boxing. Had good record fighting nobodies. Got title shot against Kid Gavilan. Pre fight TV included Mayor of Chicago. But ,sad for TV, Davey landed only 6or 7 punches and referee stopped fight in 7th round, I believe, to save Davey after three knockdowns and to avoid serious injury. Jack
