Off to Cedar Point...

Roller Coaster Capital of the World...

Just a note to say we'll be away for a few days. We're off to Sandusky, Ohio, to visit Great Wolf Lodge and Cedar Point. My oldest daughter is an amusement park and roller coaster fanatic. She insists that I go on one of the tallest and fastest coasters in the world with her, The Top Thrill Dragster... Jeepers...

It will be good for your Prayer Life, Jeff!

Never in my life would I get on that thing. I've run before the bulls (though not in Pamplona), I'm fine on the excitement thing.

You get all the fun stuff! :-) Have a safe trip.

Is that thing insane or what? If I go on it, I'll definitely be praying, but you know what? Discretion might be the better part of valor.

I'd like to take a pass on it, but what Dad could let his daughter go alone?

Jeff, if you don't mind saying, why would you not vote for Hilary?

What a bunch of wusses! Roller-coasters rock. Your daughter obviously gets it. I'm assuming she's been on the Cyclone at Coney Island? If not, she better go quick, because I've heard they're about to get rid of Astroland and Disney-fy and ruin Coney. Coney simply won't be the same without the Freak Show Bar. Watching Insectavora devour live insects over a cold Brooklyn Lager. . . .

Have a great trip!

I've been there! Great place, actually. Oddly enough roller coasters don't trip my motion sickness. Maybe they exorcise it. ;)

Hello all,

Well, we survived the trip.

Alyosha,

The prayer worked! Margaret was all psyched-up to try out that Top Thrill Dragster, but the damned foolish contraption broke down before we had a chance to ride it, so I was spared the ingnominy of having to decline getting on.

:-D

My daughters and I did hit 11 other roller coasters though, including the Millenium Force, which is just a monster, MONSTER coaster, the aptly-named Raptor, and the dementedly-designed Wicked Twister.

Liam,

You were in the running of the bulls? What's the trick for survival? Whenever I hear about someone getting injured or killed in Pamplona, it is usually some spirit-imbiber from an english-speaking country. The big tomato fight in Valencia looks more up my alley.

William,

I thought I heard Coney Island was slated to close this June. It was sold off for casinos or condos, or something like that? Something that New York is already lacking? We would have loved to have gone before it closes. We're disappointed, because we were sure that there were going to be unique tattoos and tee-shirts to be found on the clientele at Coney that couldn't possibly be found anywhere else. There is a Cyclone at Six Flags New England, too. I wonder if it's the same thing as the one at Coney... I also wonder if they'll still have Nathan's Hot-Dog Eating Contest there, where that Japanese kind defends his crown every year.

Hi Garpu,

The coasters were great, and I didn't get any motion sickness either. It's the things that spin that kill me!

Crystal, you asked,

why would you not vote for Hillary?

I guess that's a long story, but I can try to sum it up in a few line items.

- She's been endorsed by Emily's List. Sorry, but I am very, very far from where they are.

- I can't think of anything that she has really accomplished on her own. To me, she seems like the very antithesis of a real feminist. She's a woman who has achieved her fame and status by hitching her wagon to a powerful man who also happens to be a serial philanderer, which actually seems terribly old-fashioned to me.

- The one thing she did try her hand at running was the reform of the health care system, which she conducted largely in secret and with arrogance, and turned out to be such a terrifyingly bureaucratic boondoggle that it gave the Republicans the House and Senate, and caused this crucially important issue to sit on the back-burner for over a decade.

- She is positioning herself as a champion of labor these days, but it's important to remember that she was on the Board of the notoriously union-busting Wal-Mart from 1986 to 1992, when they were growing hugely and putting mom-and-pop stores out of business all over the country.

- I think she has a mean streak. I don't think she's a very nice person. The White House travel office controversy gave some evidence of that.

- I was put off right from the begining, when she made the "I guess I could have stayed at home and baked cookies" remark. I found that insensitive and offensive to stay-at-home-mothers everyhere, including my own wife.

Sorry, here's the tomato fight in Valencia.
