It's a little annoying though, because it built my linklist out of a really old version of my old template. Don't know why it did that.Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10754406706300818849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26437387.post-80883563093343280742009-06-03T14:18:43.552-05:002009-06-03T14:18:43.552-05:00Hee! You and Crystal really discussed some of my thoughts, but I do agree with what you said here: "There seems to be quite a bit of evidence to suggest that the early spread of Christianity was especially driven by women who would have been duty-bound to enter into forced marriages in Roman Society. Living consecrated lives presented them with a freedom of sorts."

Funny, to see something from Pagels which didn't cause me to want to gouge my eyes out. ;-)Mariahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12743644644608446685noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26437387.post-8254431559806036472007-05-30T21:15:00.000-05:002007-05-30T21:15:00.000-05:00Crystal,I admit that the parallels that you mentio...Crystal,

I admit that the parallels that you mentioned did occur to me. Even if you don't necessarily feel a sense of kinship or inspiration regarding her, I was hoping that you might at least get a chuckle out of "she who bumps into things". :-)

I think you're correct in saying that the tendency to escape forced marriages by entering religious life survived into Medieval times. I also think that there have always been plenty of people of same-sex-attraction in convents and monastaries. Life was just too difficult without a partner. You couldn't really survive on your own. The consecrated life provided them with a purpose that couldn't be found elsewhere, a means of mutual support, and way to contribute to the wider society.Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10754406706300818849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26437387.post-90557547689032961192007-05-30T12:25:00.000-05:002007-05-30T12:25:00.000-05:00I hadn't heard of Kateri Tekakwitha before. I think that was probably true in medieval times as well as ancient.crystalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05681674503952991492noreply@blogger.com
